WEEK FOUR SCREENING : HI SCORE GIRL (2019-)

my [cool] university blog

This week’s screening was Hi Score Girl which is a Japanese Anime series which was released in 2019 and was based off the Japanese Manga Hi Score Girl. I had very little expectations because I absolutely hate cartoon-like animated films because I feel as though I’m unable to directly connect with a character that isn’t a ‘real person’. I surprisingly enjoyed watching the first six episodes and noticed almost instantly a clear distinction between cartoons and anime. While my only issue was  the storyline being slow and dragged on much more than it need, I did have a genuine interest in the games that were featured in each episode (especially street fighter).

Gaming was of course at the heart of each episode and featured various different types and styles of games. I wanted to further explore the popularity of games in Japan and its culture.

The Japanese gaming industry…

WEEK THREE SCREENING : CAKE (2018)

my [cool] university blog

Week threes screening was the Pakistani film ‘Cake’ which was released in 2018 and released by Asim Abbasi.

This week, I really found myself struggling to grasp onto the film as I found the storyline to drag on in comparison to last week’s screening of ‘Furie’. From this, it was difficult to continuously tweet throughout the film which made it hard to begin this blog post from the lack of tweets I could refer back to. In this blog post, I will be reflecting and researching into the very first observation I made about the film and that was in regards to the cultural attitudes and tradition when it comes to senior citizen living in Asian cultures.

The tweet above stemmed from a scene in the film where I noticed a lot of caregiving towards the father and mother being placed on the children. Being half Filipino, I was…

bringing new meaning to the ‘tiger mum’ cliché.

‘Furie’ is a Vietnamese film which was released in 2019 and directed by Lê Văn Kiet. The film raked in $5.8 million in the box office in the first two weeks once released which broke the record for the highest-grossing Vietnamese film in history (https://english.vietnamnet.vn, 2019).

Okay, right off the bat ‘Furie’ was one of the best movies I’ve ever watched for educational purposes. Although, it is still early days I found myself relying a lot less on the subtitles, but still grasping onto the plot of the film through sound effects, camera angles/shots, lighting, facial expressions, hand gestures, body language and various other cinematic film techniques.

One of the very first observations I made was the main storyline of the entire film, and that was the kidnapping of Mai (Hai’s daughter). My ‘kidnapping’ observation took a turn when…

WEEK ONE SCREENING : LOVE FOR SALE (2018)

my [cool] university blog

Love For Sale is an Indonesian film which was directed by Andibachtiar Yusuf and released in 2018. The film explores a single man who is challenged by his friends to bring a partner to his friend’s wedding. He then searches for casual companionship for the wedding on a dating app ‘Love Incorporated’.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the live screening of the film and this made it quite hard to live tweet as I was not able to connect with other students whilst viewing the film the following day. One of the main observations I made whilst watching the film was the stereotyped gender roles prevalent between Richard and Arini’s companionship. In the film, it is shown that Richard takes care of his printing business whilst Arini stays at home cooking meals, cleaning and constantly checking up on Richard. One of the most standard stereotypes to how men are…
